Fado d'Anto
(António Nobre / Francisco Menano)

A cabra da velha torre
Meu amor, chama por mim...
Quando um estudante morre
Os sinos tocam assim...

Oh! Quem me dera abraçar-te
Contra o peito, assim, assim...
Levar-me a morte e levar-te
Toda abraçadinha a mim!

The bell (1) of the old tower (2)
Calls me, my love...
When a student dies
This is how the bells play...

Oh, how I wish to hold you
Against my chest, just like this...
And death to take me and to take you
Closely hugging to me.

Translation notes:

1. There where two bells: a small one, ringing on half-hours and daily at 7 AM, calling the students to the university classes - the "cabra" (meaning both "goat" and "wicked woman"); and a large one, ringing at full hours, called the "cabrão" (meaning both "big male goat" and "rascal").

2. Reference to the bell tower of the University of Coimbra.
